Review methodology

How we score LLC formation services

The BLFS Editorial Score is a structured assessment of official pricing, service terms, package details, disclosures, and customer-facing policies. We verify key claims against provider sources and clearly identify details that require confirmation before purchase.

25%

Pricing clarity

Service fee, state-fee separation, renewal visibility, and add-on clarity.

20%

Registered agent value

Privacy, scanning, coverage, renewal price, and how central agent service is to the provider.

20%

Founder fit

How well the service matches beginners, privacy buyers, budget filers, startups, or non-US owners.

20%

Support and workflow

Checkout clarity, dashboard usefulness, document access, correction support, and reminders.

15%

Upsell risk

How easy it is to avoid unnecessary subscriptions, EIN fees, bundled tools, or confusing package jumps.

Verification comes before a score

Each provider receives a research and verification record. A score is shown only when official pricing, package information, service terms, and policies are complete enough to apply the rubric consistently. When key information is dynamic, quote-based, or requires checkout confirmation, we publish a research profile and clearly mark the items still being verified.

A difference of fewer than three points is treated as no clear overall leader. This prevents small scoring variations from being presented as a meaningful advantage.

How to interpret provider ratings

Category scoring anchors

The rubric uses the same 0–5 anchors for every weighted category. The resulting score is a consistent editorial assessment grounded in documented provider information.

0/5

Not documented

The public record does not support a category assessment.

1/5

Weak

Material information is missing, gated, or difficult to verify.

2/5

Below average

Some useful information is public, with important limitations.

3/5

Adequate

The provider documents the basic buyer information expected in this category.

4/5

Strong

Public terms are comparatively clear and useful, with only minor gaps.

5/5

Exceptional

The public record is unusually complete, clear, and buyer-friendly.

What we review

For each provider, we review advertised formation pricing, state-fee separation, registered agent treatment, operating agreement access, EIN handling, compliance reminders, support options, refund/cancellation language, add-on pressure, source pages, and the founder type each service appears to fit best.

Pricing and package pages can change. Each review identifies the research scope, the provider information used, and any checkout or renewal details that readers should confirm before purchase. Hands-on findings are included only when a reproducible test record supports them.

How pricing confidence works

We separate provider pricing into confidence levels. "Official public pricing" means a provider publishes enough package information to model a useful estimate. "Checkout verification needed" means the advertised entry point is visible, but package inclusions, renewals, or add-ons need confirmation. "Dynamic pricing" or "quote required" means we avoid inventing a dollar total and tell readers to verify directly.

This matters because an LLC service price is not the full LLC cost. State filing fees, registered agent renewals, EIN help, operating agreements, compliance subscriptions, expedited filing, annual reports, and local licenses can all change the real number.

Source verification and hands-on testing

Our standard provider assessment verifies official pricing, package details, terms, disclosures, and published policies. Hands-on checkout, filing, dashboard, support, cancellation, renewal, or document-quality findings are reported separately when the review includes a documented test record.

Requirements for a published hands-on test

A future review may be labeled hands-on only when its test record identifies the tester, date, package and amount paid, whether access was complimentary, the exact workflow completed, and the evidence retained.

Reviews without a separate test record remain clearly identified as structured research and verification assessments.

Update cadence

Provider pages, state fees, and compliance rules can change. We prioritize updates for high-traffic reviews, major comparison pages, state-fee data, and any provider whose public package pricing changes materially. Readers should confirm the final checkout total and renewal terms before paying because offers can change faster than any editorial website can reasonably republish them.

What the score is not

The BLFS Editorial Score is not legal, tax, or financial advice. It is also not a promise that a provider is the right fit for every business. Owners should still compare state fees, renewal terms, registered agent needs, and whether professional legal or tax advice is appropriate.
